Lancia Beta The Lancia Beta range was developed after Fiat took over at Lancia. The name 'Beta' was chosen to signify the 'start again' idea now that Lancia had come under the control of Fiat, and because 'Alpha' would have been confused with 'Alfa (Romeo)'. The 4-door berlina weas launched in 1972 with a Fiat-designed fastback body that did not have a hatchback. Gianpaolo Boano (son of Felice Mario Boano) working at the Fiat Style Centre produced the Beta Berlina. The Beta was given a dohc engine from the Fiat 124 Sport, but developed and built by Lancia and came in 1483cc, 1592cc and 1756cc versions, a 1297cc engine was added in 1974 for the Beta 1300. In 1975 the Berlina was restyled with help from Carozzeria Pininfarina. The 3rd rear window was extended and the ventilation grille above the rear window was incorporated into the enlarged side window. At the front a new grille and headlamps incorporated into a single glass unit, and the 1800 engine was upgraded to 1995cc. There was a further restyle in 1979 including new lights and a grille like the Lancia Delta. Beta production ended in 1981. The final version of the Beta was the 3-box saloon version called the 'Trevi' and designed by Pininfarina. |
