Lancia Beta Coupe and HPE The Lancia Beta range was developed after Fiat took over at Lancia. The name 'Beta' was chosen to signify the 'start again' idea now that Lancia had come under the control of Fiat, and because 'Alpha' would have been confused with 'Alfa (Romeo)'. The 4-door berlina weas launched in 1972 with a Fiat-designed fastback body that did not have a hatchback. The Beta was given a dohc engine from the Fiat 124 Sport, but developed and built by Lancia and came in 1483cc, 1592cc and 1756cc versions, a 1297cc engine was added in 1974 for the Beta 1300, and the 1756cc engine expanded to 1995cc in 1975. Piero Castagnero designed the Beta coupe in house for Lancia in 1973, and this was given sportier versions of the 1592cc and 1756cc engines. The engine choice changed to 1585cc and 1995cc engines in 1975 after the Oil Crisis, and in 1976 a Beta Coupe with 1297cc engine replaced the aged Fulvia 1300 Coupe. There was a restyle in 1981, with added matte black and a new grille, and fuel injection for the 2-litre engine. In 1982 the Beta VX 2000 was introduced with a 1995cc supercharged engine, and in 1984 the Beta Coupe stopped production. The Coupe also had an Estate Car variant called the 'HPE' (High Performance Estate) from 1974. The HPE productionised a study by Carozzeria Pininfarina and was built on the longer Berlina floorpan, with a coupe front half a 3-door estate car at the rear. Mechanically this had the same options as the coupe. |
