Lancia Beta Coupe Spider The Lancia Beta range was developed after Fiat took over at Lancia. The name 'Beta' was chosen to signify the 'start again' idea now that Lancia had come under the control of Fiat, and because 'Alpha' would have been confused with 'Alfa (Romeo)'. The 4-door berlina weas launched in 1972 with a Fiat-designed fastback body that did not have a hatchback. The Beta was given a dohc engine from the Fiat 124 Sport, but developed and built by Lancia and came in 1483cc, 1592cc and 1756cc versions, a 1297cc engine was added in 1974 for the Beta 1300, and the 1756cc engine expanded to 1995cc in 1975. In 1974 The Beta Spider was launched based on a study by Carozzeria Pininfarina, although the car was actually built by Zagato from cut Coupe shells. The Spider was only a Targa coupe rather than a full convertible. The Spider was produced until 1982 having the same options as the Coupe models, but there was never a 1300 Spider nor a Spider 2000 VX. |
