Lotus Eclat (Type 76, Type 84)
Oliver Winterbottom designed the Lotus Elite (Type 75). This was launched with the Lotus 907 1973cc alloy 4-cylinder engine already employed by the Jensen-Healey but now giving 155bhp. Ital Design did the interior. In 1980 the Elite was ugraded with the Lotus 912 2174cc 160bhp engine. Americans wanted an Elite with a boot, so Oliver Winterbottom designed the Type 76 Lotus Eclat, which shared its mechanics and most of its body with the Elite. A 2.2-litre Lotus Eclat (Type 84) was launched in 1980 at the same time as the Elite 2.2.

Lotus Eclat SC 1975. Designed by Oliver Winterbottom as a follow up to the Lotus Elite (Type 75) also by Winterbottom, he gave the Eclat a more conventional tail with a boot.
Lotus Eclat SC 1975 front
Lotus Eclat SC 1975. The Type 76 Eclat was essentially a more conventionally bodied version of the Type 75 Elite, intended to appeal to the North American market. Under the bonnet the Lotus 907 1973cc dohc 4-cylinder engine developed for the Jensen-Healey. In the Eclat there was only a 4-speed gearbox.

Lotus Eclat SC 1975. The wedge-shaped Lotus Elite (Type 75) was a bit too controversial for some markets so Oliver Winterbottom revisited his design and came up with a more conventional booted Lotus Eclat (Type 76).
