From 1872 Carl Benz had been involved with unreliable partners and couldn't progress his ideas for automotive engines. Then in 1883 Carl Benz set up Benz & Co. Rheinische Gasmotoren-Fabrik, Mannheim with investors and produced Gas Engines which at last gave Benz a secure income. With that money he went onto develop his first Motor Car which was patented in 1886. But in 1899 his expanding company had a downturn and Carl Benz left his own company in 1901 but returned in 1904 to help Benz & Cie rise to prosperity until it merged with Daimler in 1926
