Mercedes-Benz 'fintail' W111 coupes The 'fintail' (or Heckflosse in German) was a replacement for the 'Ponton' Mercedes-Benz cars. It re-used some of the Ponton in a widened and restyled car with American looks and the rear fins which gave it the nickname. In 1961 the two-door coupes were launched, mechanically as the W111 saloons, but with new styling by Paul Bracq which tamed the rear fins. A convertible version was launched at Frankfurt 1961. Power for the 220SE came from the M127 2195cc 6-cylinder engine. A 300SE (W112) was announced in March 1962 with the M189 2996cc engine, but this is considered to be a different model. The W111 and W112 were replaced in 1965, but the W111 2-doors were kept in production as the newer model was not developed into a 2-ddor form. A 250SE replaced the 220SE in 1965 with a new M129 2496cc engine, and in 1967 it was replaced by the 2778cc 280SE 2-door. In August 1969 the 280SE was supplemented by the 280SE 3.5 powered by a new M116 V8 engine of 3499cc, and a restyle gave a wider grille. All models ended production in 1971 and Mercedes-Benz did not produce its own convertible 4-seater for two decades. |
