Mercedes-Benz 'fintail' W110 and W111 sedans
The 'fintail' (or Heckflosse in German) was a replacement for the 'Ponton' Mercedes-Benz cars. It re-used some of the Ponton in a widened and restyled car with American looks and the rear fins which gave it the nickname. The 4-door sedan was launched at the 1959 Frankfurt Salon with the 220b, 220Sb and 220SEb models, and the 2195cc inline six engine from the 'Ponton' cars was carried over. In 1961 the W111 Ponton was adapted for a new lower priced W110 model to give a shorter, plainer car with round headlamps. The 190 and 190D had 4-cylinder engines of 1.9-litres or 1988cc for the diesel, and the diesel was a huge seller particular as a taxi. The 4-cylinder cars were upgraded in 1965 at the same time as a new model was brought in to replace the W111 6-cylinder 220 cars. The W110 190 was upgraded to 200 with a 1988cc 4-cylinder petrol engine, or as the 200D with 1988cc 4-cylinder diesel. There was also a new 2306cc 6-cylinder engine fitted into the 230 model. In 1968 all the 'fintails' were replaced.

Mercedes-Benz 200 (W110) 1967. The W110 'Fintail' had simpler lines and trim than the 6-cylinder W111 models. At the rear, smaller lamps and only a single bumper bar identified the smaller models. This second generation W110 now has a ventilation slot in the c-pillar, which the larger W111 were given from launch.

Mercedes-Benz 230 S 1967 (W110). The 230S was introduced in 1965 with a 2306cc version of the M180 inline six engine. It retained the shoter bonnet of the W110 even though it was given the appearance of the bigger W111; in effect it was a 6-cylinder in a 4-cylinder body.

Mercedes-Benz 200 (W110) 1967 lamps. From 1965-68 the new W110 models had a slight restyle, and gained a combination indicator and sidelamp unit below the headlamp. Earlier 4-cylinder models had a plain front panel with indicators on top of the wing; the 6-cylinder W111 models had a one-piece headlamp unit

Mercedes-Benz 220 SE - headlamp. This single unot was the standard wear on W111 models, except for North America where twin stacked round headlamps were flanked by triangular indicator and sidelamps. The cheaper W110 had single round headlamps, later supplemented by a combination indicator and sidelamp unit.
