Cars were always expensive at the start, and often bought by very wealthy people, usually to replace horse and carriage. From the start therefore cars were often designed for comfort and luxury. As lower priced mass production cars came out, some manufacturers decided to specialise on the luxury market instead. A few manufacturers attempted to produce luxury cars as well as cheaper cars.
