Mercedes-Benz 450SLC (C107) Daimler-Benz replaced the SL 'Pagoda' Coupe with a new R107 model based on the underpinnings of the W114/W115 sedans. For the bigger C107 2+2 SLC the R107 was lengthened by 360mm, and some changes were made to give extra strength for 4 passengers; the weight penalty was just 70 kilos. Launched in 1971 as the 350 SLC, these cars used a 3499cc V8 M116 engine, except for the American market where a 4520cc M117 V8 was fitted. In 1974 Mercedes responded to the fuel crisis by announcing the 280SL/SLC with a 6-cylinder 2746cc fuel-injected engine that was surprisingly sporty and only took one second longer to reach 100Kmh than the 450. Mercedes had re-entered motor racing and produced a special version of the 450 SLC that was given a new aluminium 4973cc V8 engine with aluminium body parts and this was sold as the 450 SLC 5.0. In 1980 the range was rationalised to the 280 and new 380 and 500 models of both SL and SLC, and all the SLC models were replaced in 1981 by the new W126 SEC coupes. 45,600 SLCs were sold against 300,000 SL roadsters. |
