Mercury launched its full-size model in 1952, using the name 'Monterey' for one range, with 'Custom' used for the entry level model. This Mercury had much in common with the contemporary Ford Crestliner. For 1955 Mercury revised the styling with coupes and hardtops evoking the 1954 XM-800 project car, although the rear portion of the Custom wagon is much more utilitarian than anything on that futuristic show car. The Mercury cars were given a 118-inch wheelbase, and a 4,778cc Y-block V8 engine in 1955. Mercury added the Montclair above the Monterey in 1955, but there wasn't a wagon version of that. A new larger Mercury took over for 1957, with quad lamps from 1958, and a new 122-inch wheelbase. The 1959-60 Mercury went up to 126-inches. Wheelbase was contracted to 120-inch for the 1961 model.
