The 1957 Mercury Monterey series 7M was all new for 1957, no longer using pressings from Ford and Lincoln models and was built on a 122-inch wheelbase. But Ford priced it higher and lost sales. However, the Edsel was to be launched for 1958 and Ford probably wanted to move the Mercury clear of the Edsel brand. The Monterey 4-door sedan was the big seller, and 53,839 were made in 1957. Montereys were powered by the 5,115cc (312) Y-block V8 engine, but there was also a 6,029cc (368) option. Body styles were 2-door and 4-door sedans, 2-door and 4-door Phaeton Coupes, and a convertible. Mercury continued with the Monterey series 8M for 1958 with trim differences and a 6,282cc (383) engine, and introduced the very lowly Mercury Medalist withn the old 5,115cc (312) engine to sell beneath the Monterey. A new 126-inch Monterey was introduced for 1959.
