Morris Cowleys
In 1915 the first Morris Cowley appeared as a cut-price Morris 'Bullnose' Oxford. Whereas the Oxford was an assemblage of components from British companies, the Cowley used American components as these were cheaper. In 1919 a new Morris Cowley was launched with British components, including an engine from the British Hotchkiss company, which became Morris Engines in 1923 after William Morris bought the company. For 1926, Oxford and Cowleys gained new chassis, but the Cowley was only given rear wheel brakes. Gone was the 'Bullnose' radiator, now replaced by the cheaper and more efficient 'Flatnose' radiator, behind which sat the same 1548cc sv 4-cylinder engine. Another chassis change was made for 1932 and revised bodies, and the 1548cc engine could be replaced by an 1803cc sv unit at no extra cost. In 1933 a brand new 1548cc engine was given to the Cowley and the name became 'Morris Twelve-Four' from 1935. There was a 'Cowley-Six' for 1934, but essentially this was the same 1938cc Morris Major, and for 1935 this became the 'Morris Fifteen-Six'. The 'Cowley' name next appeared on the 'Morris Cowley MCV' range of light vans and trucks based on the Morris Oxford Series MO. From 1954, the Series II and III Morris Oxford cars were available with a 1200cc B-series engine (1498cc from 1956) and less trim and equiment. The 'Cowley' name was lost forever when the Farina Morris Oxfords were launched.
