The '98' emerged out of the 'Series 90' in 1941, the 98 being the 8-cylinder version of the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, whilst the six cylinder version continued to sell for one last year as the Oldsmobile 96. The 98 shared its GM C-body with the Buick Roadmaster and Cadillac. The new 'Rocket V8 engine was given to the 1949 Oldsmobile 98, and the higher output version of this engine was thereafter shared between the Super 88 on a shorter wheelbase and the Oldsmobile 98. Although sharing styling, the Oldsmobile 98 continued to be built on the GM C-body whilst the 88 and Super 88 used the B-body. 'Oldsmobile 98' was used for the final time in 1996.
