The '88' was a new model for 1949, The Super 88 was launched in 1951 but based on the GM B-body, and in 1952 some of the design features of the Super 88 were given to the A-body 88. An all new body was introduced in 1954. In 1957 the 88 went onto a new GM B-body with a distinctive 3-piece rear window (also found on the 1957 Buick Riviera). For 1958 this was given radically reworked front and rear sections and appeared to be an all new car. The extraordinary body was designed under Art Ross and had so much decoration that it was dubbed 'ChromeMobile'. The 4-door pillarless Holiday Sedan continued with a 2-door version, along with 2 and 4 door sedans, convertible and 4-door station wagons. Similar bodies were available on the pricier Super 88 and on the bigger 98. The 88 was given a new body after 1959.
