The finances of Panhard et Levassor forced them into the arms of Citroen in 1955, and this made sense because the Dyna and PL17 models filled a gap between Citroen's own 2CV and its ID and DS models. Panhard confidently went onto to develop the 24 model, with their own Louis Bionier designing it, along with Renee Ducassou-Pehau and Andre Jouan. First exhibited in 1963, the Panhard is restricted to markets where it will not be up against Citroen's Ami 6, and is presented as a 2-door coupe even though it is to be offered as a 2-door Coupe or a longer 2-door saloon. Panhard shelved plans for a 4-door saloon and hoped that Citroen would eventually sign this off, but they didn't. The C and CT were launched in 1963, the longer B and BT in 1964. The 'T' indicates the hotter 60 bhp Tigre engine and these cars were more popular. Production ended in 1967 and the name of 'Panhard' lost to car production, although military vehicles continued. Citroen had the Ami 6 car in this market, and were developing the Citroen GS which had a very similar recipe to the Panhard 24; perhaps that's why Citroen failed to promote this Panhard. Less than 25,000 of the final Panhard were sold.
