Plymouth P5, P6 In 1937 Plymouth introduced new steel bodies for its entry-level P3, Deluxe P4 and PT50 truck. The styling was mildly reworked for the 1938 cars with a changed waterfall grille and high-mounted headlamps. American sales dropped massively in 1938, with Chrysler especially suffering, but Plymouth still topped the Chrysler group sales, and held third place against all American brands. The 'new' 1938 were the entry level P5, later christened 'Roadking', and the P6 Deluxe. All cars had the Chrysler group L-head inline six cylinder engine. Bodies offered included this 5-window coupe, 2-door and 4-door sedans, Convertible Coupe, and 7-passenger sedan. The bodywork was shared with other Chryslers, DeSotos and Dodges, although Plymouths were usually a couple of inches shorter. Plymouth P6 cars were also manufactured in Canada, and when these were exported to Britain they were sold as 'Chrysler Wimbledon'. In 1940 Plymouths were given the new body that other Chrysler group cars had acquired in 1939; the Plymouth P9, P10, P11, P12 went on sale. |
