In 1955 the Pontiac Star Chief and Chieftain and several Chevrolet models including the Bel Air were given a new GM A-body. Styling was in tune with the new GM look given to Chevrolets and Buicks, and for Pontiac was by Paul Gillan. The 1955 Chieftain had wide stainless steel strips running down the bonnet, replacing the 5 'Silver Streaks' used on the outgoing model (for 1957 these strips were deleted). There was a 2-door Catalina hardtop version of the Chieftain and in 1956 a 4-door Catalina hardtop (this model) was added. A 287 cu.in 'Strato Streak' V8 engine powered the Chieftains until a 316 cu.in unit became available in 1956. A new model of Chieftain took over in 1957, but in 1958 the 'Catalina' name was expanded into a full model range and the 'Chieftain' name dropped.
