General Motors restyled its cars for 1941 with Pontiac gaining a much wider grille, and calling all its cars the 'Torpedo'. Deluxe, Streamliner and Custom models were offered with Six or Eight engines. Deluxes moved up to a 119-inch wheelbase and shared with Chevrolet the A-body. Streamliner and Custom models went to the larger 122-inch platform shared with Buick and Oldsmobiles. 1942 Pontiacs were restyled but production was curtailed by the war. The name 'Chieftain' first appeared as the top trim level for the 1942 Streamliner. Pontiac production resumed for 1946 with a new grille, changed again for 1947, and again for 1948. Pontiacs had carried Silver Streaks down the centre line from 1935, and sometimes sold as 'Pontiac Silver Streaks', but the 1948 Pontiac Eights were badged 'Silver Streak'. For 1949 Pontiacs were given a new 120-inch A-body.
