In 1954 the first Star Chief model was launched out of the Chieftain, and using a Chevrolet A-body but extended by 11-inches to give 123.5-inch wheelbase, against 120-inches for the Chieftain. It was powered by a 4,079cc (249) straight-8 engine and offered as a Deluxe or better equipped Custom. Bodies available were a 4-door sedan, 2-door convertible or the pillarless Catalina 2-door hardtop. For 1955 a new chassis, body and engine was given to the Chieftain and Star Chief ranges.

Pontiac Star Chief 1954 Catalina Coupe. The Star Chief was a new model for 1954, which extended the 122-inch wheelbase of the standard Chieftain to 124-inches, and the overall length from 202.6-inches to 213.6-inches, mainly in the boot. This compared to the standard A-body used by the Chevrolet BelAir at 115-inches and 196.4-inches.
