Porsche 911 Turbo (930) Porsche followed up the Carrera 2.7 RS with a new turbocharged model first shown at the 1974 Paris Salon. Using turbocharging that had been learned on the Porsche 917/30 Can Am racers, it was developed by Ernst Fuhrmann under the eye of Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche. This model was the Porsche Type-930, although it is usually known as the '911 Turbo'. At its heart lay a 2993cc six cylinder boxer engine from the Carrera 3.0, and it went into production as the Porsche Turbo ('Turbo Carrera' for the Americans). Based on the G-Series bodies, Turbos are recognisable by their wider arches and 'whale tail' spoiler which gave important aerodynamic assistance and cooling, but this body became an option on many lesser 911s. In 1978 the engine was enlarged to 3299cc and would subsequently be developed into the normally aspirated 3.2litre Porsche 911 unit. The Porsche Turbo continued in production until 1989 when replaced by the 964 Turbo. |
