Porsche 944
The Porsche 944 was launched for the 1983 season using most of the body parts from the 924, and about half the engine of the 928. In fact the 2.5litre 4-cylinder engine was extensively reworked from the 5.0litre V8 and included counter-rotating balance shafts to make the engine smoother. Whereas the 924 had intended to be a entry level car, the 944 was pitched higher although still very sporting. The '1985B' cars had numerous mechanical improvements, upgrades to the interior, and 'phone dial' alloy wheels. In 1989 the engine was upgraded to 2.7litres mainly to give extra torque. The 944 Turbo (951) was available from 1986 with 220bhp, and in 1988 this was upgraded to the 944 Turbo S (952), but from 1989 the 'Turbo S' were simply called '944 Turbo'. The 944 S from 1987 was a high performance non-Turbo model with dohc and 4-valves per cylinder, this was upgraded as the '944 S2' with a 3-litre engine from 1989. A 944 Turbo cabriolet was available from 1991 built for Porsche by ASC in Weinsburg, Germany, but only 625 were made. The 944 was replaced by the 968 from 1992 to 1995.

Porsche 944 1985. Porsche took the body and mechanics and re-fashioned it to accept half the 5-litre engine of the V8 928 and created the 944 in 1983. This is the '1985B' model which had many changes including a flush mounting windscreen.

Porsche 944 1985. The 944 added the 2.5litre engine to the 924 'recipe' and thus coupled half the 928 V8 engine to the torque tube and rear transaxle in the 924. The result was near even weight distribution and therefore fantastic handling.
