Porsche 911 (964) In 1988 Porsche previewed the 964 model by exhibiting a lower 964 Speedster model which was actually based on 930 Turbo mechanics. In 1989 Porsche launched the new '964' specification 911. 85 per cent of the 911 964 was new, although the body kept some of the original panels, and design was directed by Anatole Lapine (from Latvia). The first model launched was the 'Carrera 4', a four wheel drive car derived from the 959 supercar. New bumpers replaced the 'accordion' safety bumpers. The Carrera 4 had a 3600cc 6-cylinder engine, whilst the Carrera 3.2 carried on with the 3164cc '930' engine until 'Carrera 2' was launched in 1990 with the 3.6 unit. Coupe and Cabriolet models were available and the Targa model was the last Targa design with a removable roof panel. The was a Carrera RS version produced in 1992 with ultra lightweight body but only 2-wheel drive intended for the 'Carrera Cup races. A Turbo version of the 964 was introduced in 1991 to replace the 930 Turbo, but it had a revised version of the 3299cc 930 unit, which was upgraded to 381bhp in 1992, and enlarged to 3600cc for 1993 and 1994. A newer 964 Speedster built on 964 Carrera 2 mechanics was launched in 1994. The 964 Porsche 911 gave way to 993 Porsche 911 in 1994. |
