Porsche 911 (993) The final version of the 'original' Porsche 911 was the Type-993 produced from 1993 until 1998. Englishman Tony Hatter penned the the new 993 bodywork. Although resembling all the previous Porsche 911 models, it is said that it only shared the doors, engines and gearboxes of the outgoing Type-964. It is recognisable by its 'lay flat' headlamps, and now came as a 'Carrera' without stating whether 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive lay underneath. Coupe and Cabriolet models were available, and in 1996 a new Targa model was designed with a retractable glass roof in place of a removable roof panel that needed to be stored. New Targas were built first as cabriolets and then had the Targa roof added. The 993 Turbo was introduced in 1995 with a 3.6litre turbocharged engine and was the first all wheel drive Porsche turbo. The Turbo had widened wheel arches and a fixed rear wing that contained the intercooler, although this bodywork could be specified for lesser models, notably the Carrera 4S and Carrera S. The 993 was replaced by the Type-996 Porsche 911 that was an all-new car with a completely new body and new water-cooled engines. |
