Supercars The term 'Supercar' dates as far back 1920 when an Ensign Six was advertised as a 'supercar', however the first supercar is often said to be the Lamborghini Miura of 1966. After that many Lamborghinis, Maseratis and Ferraris came to be called 'Supercars', particularly if they had mid-mounted engines. Speed is an element in the ingredients for a Supercar, and the front-engined Maserati Ghibli and Ferrari would be regarded as supercars now. However, exclusivity is important to the concept of a supercar, and cars such as the Ferrari F40, Jaguar XJ220 and Porsche 959 score on this point, whereas the Ferrari 328, Jaguar XJ-S, and Porsche 911 probably do not. There isn't a clear definition of 'Supercar', but the cars shown here have something extraordinary about them which in my mind gives them the accolade 'Super'. |
