Reliant Rialto
In 1981 the Reliant was replaced by the Reliant Rialto. The Reliant Rialto was completely new, having a more aerodynamic body designed by IAD, mounted onto a galvanised chassis, and given an 848cc alloy engine. There was a Rialto 2 from 1984 with a higher torque engine. But in 1986 the Rialto SE was launched with the original specification engine and now a proper hatchback rear door. Rialto production continued until 1998 even though a new Reliant Robin had been introduced in 1989.

Reliant Rialto 1984 2 Van. Powered by an HT-E version of the 850cc engine, this was tuned for torque and was lower revving for economy. However, this engine gave only 37.5bhp instead of 40bhp, and in spite of a changed rear axle ratio the HT-E option was not popular.

Reliant Rialto 2 1984 Van. The Rialto 2 was introduced in 1984 with the controversial HTC-E engine designed for torque and economy but giving reduced power. The original engine returned in 1986.

Reliant Rialto 2 1986 Estate. The Rialto was a complete redesign of the Robin, and was launched in 1982 with more aerodynamic body and galvanised chassis. In 1986 the Rialto SE had the unpopular HT-E engine replaced by the original 850cc engine.

Reliant Rialto SE 1988. The SE version of the Rialto replaced the Rialto 2 in 1986, reverting back to the previous version of the 848cc engine (the high torque economy HT-E was only fitted from 1984-86).

Reliant Rialto SE 1988. Only the estate and the van version were offered on the Rialto SE, the hatchback was dropped. SE models carried black band to 'modernise' the appearance. There was also a 'hatchback' Rialto which had a fixed fastback rear window with a small bootlid beneath
