Starting with drawings by Robert Boyer in 1964 the Renault Project 117 gradually evolved into the Renault 12 which was launched at the 1969 Paris Salon. An iron 1,289cc 4-cylinder engine powered the 4-door Renault 12 which was sold in L and Tl versions. In 1970 the 5-door Break was added and also the Renault 12 Gordini with 1,565cc aluminium 120bhp engine.

Renault 12 Gordini 1972. The Gordini option sold 5,100 versions from 1970 to 1974 and the specification included 1565cc 113bhp twin carb engine, ventilated front discs, 5-speed gearbox and styling changes. This was the last car developed by Gordini, and it had modest successin World Rally Championship events at class level.
