The Renault 6 was a kind of evolution of the Renault 4, using the mechanics of that car combined with a body in the spirit of the much larger Renault 16. Projet 117 commenced in 1965 to fill the gap between the Renault 4 and the R8. The Renault 6 was intended to replace the Renault Dauphine and sell in the 6 CV tax category in France. Launched at the 1968 Salon de Paris, the Renault 6 had an 845cc engine, although a 956cc unit was soon offered and later an 1,108cc engine. In 1974 the Renault 6 is revised with a new grille and square headlamps. Production ends in France in 1980, but continues in other countries and 1,700,000 were sold.
