Renault R8 Gordini
The Renault R8 was launched in June 1962 with a roomy, if boxy body, designed by Philippe Charbonneaux. The standard Renault 8 was given a new Cleon 956cc rear-mounted engine and disc brakes on all four wheels. The scorcher 1108cc 89bhp Renault 8 Gordini was announced in 1964, building on the foundation laid down by the Renault Dauphine Gordini. Henry Frétet and Amedeo Gordini reworked the engine with their own cylinder head and raised power from 50 to 89bhp. The R8 Gordini was launched at the 1964 Paris Salon. In 1966 a larger 1255cc with twin twin choke carbs gave 103 bhp, and sported twin auxiliary lamps in the front panel. Production ended in 1970 afterabout 2700 R8 Gordini 1100 and 8900 R8 Gordini 1300 had been sold. The Alpine A110 was based on the Renault R8 Gordini.

From 1946 Gordini was making and racing the Simca-Gordini cars until the contract was terminated in 1956. In that year a meeting with Renault's Pierre Dreyfus led to the Renault Dauphine-Gordini, and in turn to other Renault-Gordini cars before this outfit was absorbed into Renault Sport.
