Ransom E. Olds started manufacturing vehicles in 1897 at the Olds Motor Works in Michigan. The most famous product of these early years was the 'curved dash reo' that from 1901-04 was arguably the world's first car manufactured on an assembly line, in spite of other claims made by Henry Ford. However, REO took his company into Truck manufacture in 1910 and car manufacture was reduced; buses were also produced. Car sales were good until 1925, and in 1933 REO suffered losses in the Great depression and Ransom Eli Olds returned from retirement and ended car production in 1936. REO designed some military trucks such as the M34 and M35 which they manufactured, and were also produced by other companies such as Studebaker. In 1957 REO vehicles were taken over by the White Motor Company and then formed Diamond-REO trucks in 1967, but were sold to Volvo after bankruptcy in 1975
