Riley 12/4, 1½-litre 1934 - 1938
Riley introduced the 12/4 in 1934, giving it a new chassis and a 1496cc 11.9hp ohv engine. There were 3 body styles, the new Falcon 4-door saloon, the Kestrel 4-door fastback saloon and the Lynx 4-door open tourer. The 12/4 was relaunched as the Riley 1½litre with chassis improvements for 1936, and the handbuilt Falcon body was replaced by a new steel body by Briggs Motor Bodies. The Kestrel was also revised as a 6-light fastback, and the popular Falcon saloon gave way to a new Adelphi 6-light saloon also by Briggs. In 1936 a new 61bhp sports version of the 1½-litre was introduced as the Riley Sprite, but it was in effect a 1½-litre version of the smaller Riley Imp/Riley MPH. The Sprite engine became an option in the Adelphi, Kestrel and Sprite bodies. The 1½-litre engine survived the Nuffield take over and powered the Riley RMA in 1945.
