Rolls-Royce Phantom I, II, III
The Rolls-Royce 'New Phantom' was launched in 1925 to replace the 40/50 model (called the 'Silver Ghost'). A new 6-cylinder overhead valve engine of 7,668cc was made of 3 sets of paired cylinders which had iron heads until 1928 when alloy heads were given. The 143.5inch wheelbase chassis was inherited from the Silver Ghost with changed springs, and in Britain a 150.5inch long wheelbase version was available. Phantom Is were also manufactured in Springfield Massachusetts, often given a body by Rolls-Royce owned Brewster. 2269 Phantom Is were made in Britain and 1240 in America. In 1929 the Phantom II was launched with a revised 7668cc 6-cylinder engine given a crossflow head. A new chassis with a 150 inch chassis was given to the Phantom II, but there was also a 144 inch Continental with a tuned engine. Rolls-Royce had closed the Springfield plant in 1931. The Phantom II sold until 1936 with 1402 and 278 Continentals finding owners. In 1936 the Phantom III was launched with a new aluminium V12 7338cc ohv engine. Production ceased in 1940 with just 727 having been made.

Rolls-Royce Phantom III 1936 Hooper Limousine. The Phantom III was provided with Rolls-Royce's first ever V12 engine for road vehicles (12-cylinder engines had already been provided for aircraft). But early models suffered overheating if cruised at high speeds for long periods. A longer top gear (or Overdrive) helped to solve this.
