Rolls-Royce Motors Henry Royce made his first Royce 10 in 1904 at his Manchester electrical business. This car was shown to CS Rolls and in 1904 the Rolls-Royce partnership was formed. In 1908 Rolls-Royce opened a new factory at Derby. A new 30hp 6-cylinder model was introduced in 1906, designated the '40/50', this was later renamed the 'Silver Ghost'. The smaller 'Twenty' supplemented the Silver Ghost from 1922. Rolls-Royce purchased Bentley Motors in 1931 and the cars converged mechanically. From 1959 Rolls-Royce began building its own bodies, although it had alread purchased Mulliner and Park Ward. From 1971 Rolls-Royce was under national control, sold to VW in 1998 when Bentley was separately acquired by BMW. |
