Rolls-Royce Motors launched its first ever standard steel saloon as the Bentley MkVI in 1946. The Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn evolved out of this in 1949 with the same 4,257cc six. In 1951 the 4,566cc 6-cylinder engine was given to both Bentley and Rolls-Royce. The Bentley then became the R-type with Colin Blatchley revisions and the Silver Dawn inherited these but kept its name. The chassis was available to other coachbuilders but out of 761 Silver Dawns only 64 had coachbuilt bodies. Replaced in 1955 by the S-type/Silver Cloud, 2300 Bentleys were sold and 760 Rolls-Royces (mainly for export).
