Rover P3, 60 and 75 The P3 was introduced as a stop-gap model in 1948 because the new Americanised Rover P4 was not ready for production. Essentially an evolution of the Rover P1/P2 models, the P3 gained a new chassis frame, independent front suspension and improved brakes. There were two new engines, the '12' equivalent was given a 1595cc 4-cylinder engine and marketed as the 'Rover 60', and the '14' equivalent got a 6-cylinder 2103cc unit sold as the 'Rover 75'; there was no place in post-war austerity for a 'Rover 16' equivalent ('90' ???). New bodies were given to the P3, but with the effort going on the 'Roverbaker' P4 the new P3 ended up with bodywork that looked identical to the outgoing P2 Saloon and Sports Saloon; only the bonnet and wings from the 12 continued onto the P3. In 1949 the P3 gave way to the all new P4, although this car did adapt the P3 chassis and carry the P3 6-cylinder engine. |
