SEAT launched its 600 model two years after the Fiat 600 on which it was based. Known as the -pelotilla- (little ball), the Seat 600 was Spain's first affordable car, born into the post Civil War industrial malaise. Launched in 1957 the Seat 600 N was given a 633cc 4-cylinder engine, this was upgraded to 767cc in 1963 with the Seat 600 D. The 767cc engine was also given to a longer 4-door Seat 800 version which was unique to Spain. Italy ended production of the Fiat 600 in 1970, and Spain then issued the Seat 600 E with front-hinged doors, and in 1972 launches the Seat 600 L with high compression engine. Production ends in 1973 after 780,000 600 and 18,000 800 had been made.
