Standard Vanguard Utility Walter Belgrove designed the dramatic 'Beetle-back' Standard Vanguard Phase I drawing inspiration from an American Plymouth known to be parked outside an embassy. A new 2088cc 4-cylinder engine was given to the Vanguard, and this was later adapted for use in the Ferguson tractor. Goods versions of the Vanguard were available, including a panel van and an open-back Pickup utility (or 'Ute'). The Phase I Pickup retained the saloon's side design, but the Phase II had a more practical pickup bed. Standard Vanguard Utes were produced at Standard's Australian factory. Launched at the 1955 London Motor Show the Standard Vanguard Phase III was initially only available as a 4-door saloon. Commercial versions of the Vanguard were available from 1958 but not many were sold. However the Standard plant in Australia built many 'Utes' (Utility or Pickup) from UK produced kits, and these often had Australian market trim and colour schemes. |
