Triumph TR3 and TR3A Launched in 1955, the Triumph TR3 was very much a facelift of the TR2, the engine being uprated to 95bhp and later to 100bhp, and there was optional overdrive for the gearbox. There was also an optional steel hardtop. Few changes were made to the styling, apart from a new front grille. Mulliners of Bordesley Green continued to build the TR3 bodies, although in 1958 they were taken over by Standard-Triumph. The TR3 was the first production car to be fitted with disc brakes. After 13,300 were built, a new TR3A was launched in autum 1957 with a wider grille. There were several other minor updates, and the TR3A continued in production until 1962 with 58,000 being sold. There was a TR3B model made mainly for the American market, and sold in parallel to the TR4 during 1962. One model of the TR3B had the 2,138cc TR4 engine. Only around 3,300 TR3B were sold. |
