TVR M-series In 1972 TVR replaced the Vixen and Tuscan models with the new M-series, and were created under the ownership of Martin Lilley. Lilley and Mike Bigland developed the chassis from a modified wide body Tuscan tubular steel chassis Launched at Earls Court 1971, the M-series started with the 2500M powered by a Triumph 2,498cc 6-cylinder 106bhp federalised engine. Production started in April 1972 but the 2500M was replaced on the UK market by the V6 3000M in 1973 although the 2500M continued to sell in America until 1977 after 946 had been sold. In June 1972 TVR launched the 1600M powered by the 1599cc Ford Kent engine, but this performed rather slowly and was not a good replacement for the Vixen IV. However the 1600M was re-introduced 1975-77 and a total of 148 were sold. In August 1972 TVR introduced the 3000M for the European market powered by the 2,994cc Ford Essex 138bhp V6. A facelift was given to the M-series in 1976 with a redesigned front, smaller tail lights, and no more wing vents. 654 3000M were sold before production ended in 1979. TVR showed the TVR Taimar at Earls Court in 1976, and this was essentially an M-series with an opening hatch, and its practicality gave TVR a fast seller. In 1978 TVR offered its first convertible, the TVR 3000S, and although very much an M-series underneath most body panels were altered for the S-type. |
