Vauxhall Victor FA In 1957 Vauxhall replaced the Wyvern with the compact 'F' range of cars, and took the Velox and Cresta into a larger car. 'Victor' was a new name for Vauxhall. The design started life in Britain under David Jones; in fact 2 designs were made for approval and the simpler one was rejected in favour of the 'little Chevrolet'. However, the design was changed in Detroit after the quarter scale clay model arrived at Fisher body damaged, and the opportunity was taken not only to repair it but to modify it. The design was difficult to manufacture, and because the development time was twice shortened there were issues of panel fit, water sealing and bad rusting in FA Victors. The FA Victor was launched at the 1957 Geneva Salon and production passed 250,000 in two years, many to export markets such as Canada. The 1508cc 4-cylinder Wyvern engine powered the Victor. In 1958 a 5-door estate car was added to the Victor range, and February 1959 a Series II Victor was launched with a great taming of the original bodywork, something of a restoration to David Jones' original. In October 1960 the body was further revised with a much larger rear window. Production ended in summer 1961 after 390,000 had been produced |
