Vauxhall Victor FD
The 'coke bottle' Victor was manufactured from 1967 to 1972 with 1600cc and 1975cc OHC engines. The distinctive shape was drawn by Leo Pruneau, and his 4-door saloon and 5-door estate car was supposed to be topped by a 2-door coupe but this got cancelled. The engines were brand new 'slant four' ohc units that were supposed to have been part of a new 4 and even 8 cylinder cars. In fact the engine was only used in 4-cylinder mode, but gave rise to 1759cc and 2279cc variants in later models. At launch a Ventora model was announced with the old 3294cc inline engine from the Vauxhall Cresta, but the transmission was heavily criticised and so in October 1969 a Ventora II was brought out to address these issues. The Ventora was partly eclipsed in 1970 when the VX4/90 was announced giving similar performance but much better handling and a lighter fuel consumption. In May 1968 the 5-door estate was announced, available with 1600 and 2000 engines and also as the Victor 3300 SL Estate with the six cylinder engine. In 1972 the Vauxhall FE 'Transcontinentals' superceded the Victor FD.

Vauxhall Ventora II front
Vauxhall Ventora II. The Ventora II was launched in October 1969, ironing out some of the problems of the 1968 car. In fact the 3300cc six offered little over the newly launched 4-cylinder VX4/90, amd only the grille and vinyl roof showed a difference. Underneath was the same Leo Pruneau-designed 'coke bottle' FD Victor.

Vauxhall Victor 3300 SL Estate 1968. In February 1968 Vauxhall took the Victor FD body and injected it with the 3294cc Cresta 6-cylinder engine to create the Vauxhall Ventora. In May 1968 a new Estate car body was available for the Victor FD, and it was possible to specify the Ventora package of 6-cylinder engine and trim, but this was simply called the Victor 3300 SL.
