Zastava replaced its 750 rear-engined model, based on the Fiat 600, with a new front drive model in 1980. In fact the Yugo was also a Fiat model, but was a design that Torino had rejected and passed to Serbia for production. From 3,000 names submitted the name 'Yugo' was chosen as the badge for the new car. Marketed as the Yugo 45 or Zastava 45, it was powered by the Fiat 127 903cc ohv engine which was produced in Serbia. The Yugo 45 was soon revised as the Yugo Koral 45 with bigger tail lamps in 1988, and also offered as the Koral 55 with the 1,118cc engine from the Zastava 101. In 1987 140,000 Yugos were sold in America, but it is claimed that many of these were returned to Serbia. Later a Koral 65 was sold with a Fiat 1,301cc engine. A convertible version was also produced. The Yugo Tempo in 1995 was given the 1,118cc engine and the Tempo L had a 1,301cc Peugeot 106 engine. From 1998 the Yugo Ciao was launched, production stalled by the Yugoslavian War, and then the car was redesigned by Heuliez, but Yugo production ended in 2008.
