Zündapp Janus 250 The Zündapp Janus was an evolution of a design by Claudius Dornier to produce a 2-door 4-seater bubble car named the 'Dornier Delta' in 1954. But the design was too costly to produce and was shelved and until a licence was granted to motorcycle manufacturer Zündapp to develop the design and put it into production. The Zündapp Janus was launched in 1957, so named after the Greek God Janus who was usually portrayed as having two heads, one looking forwards and one looking to the past. Mechanically the Janus was given Zundapp's own 248cc engine from the Bella scooter mounted centrally between front and rear seats. There was macpherson strut suspension and a 4-speed gearbox, but it sold at too higher a price and had to compete against the new Fiat Nuova 500. Zündapp sold the factory to Bosch in 1958 and production ended. |
